Typing speed test

The typing test measures your speed in words per minute and your accuracy over 15, 30 or 60 seconds. No install needed.

Test length

The timer starts with your first letter, and Space moves to the next word. Press Escape to stop the test, or Tab to reach the buttons.

Runs in your browser. Test data stays on your device.

How to use the typing test

  1. Pick a test length: 15, 30 or 60 seconds.
  2. Click Start typing test. The caret goes to the box under the text.
  3. Type the words you see and press Space after each one. The timer starts with your first letter.
  4. When time is up, your results appear. Click New text for another round.

Letters you type correctly turn from gray to full color. A wrong letter is red and underlined, an extra letter is struck through and a skipped letter has a dotted underline. Enter works as Space. To leave early, press Escape or click Stop test. A stopped run gives no result. Changing the test length during a run restarts it.

What the results mean

Net speed is the number to compare between runs. The other cells show how you got it. The label under net speed follows the bands in this table, and it describes speed only.

ResultWhat it meansWhat to do
Under 20 WPM: Warming upFewer than 20 words per minute net.Nothing is wrong. Compare later runs with this one at the same test length.
20 to 39 WPM: SteadyA steady everyday pace.Look at the Most mistyped list and start with those letters.
40 to 59 WPM: QuickFaster than a steady pace.Watch the gap between raw and net speed.
60 to 89 WPM: FastA fast pace.Keep accuracy high, because one typo costs a whole word.
90 WPM or more: Very fastThe last band the test labels.Compare with your own best.
Raw speed far above net speedErrors are costing you whole words.Slow down slightly and aim for accuracy. Look at the Wrong, Extra and Missed counts under Characters.
Accuracy: correct keystrokes out of all keystrokesThe share of correct keystrokes, rounded down. Mistakes you fixed still count.Start with the letters under Most mistyped.
Consistency near 100%Your speed was almost the same every second.Nothing to fix.
Consistency well below 100%You paused or typed in bursts. The chart under Consistency shows your speed for each second.
Possible chatter: a key with a countThat key went down again within 30 ms of its previous press or release.See “A key types twice or not at all” below.

Net speed takes the characters of the words typed exactly right, plus the space after each, divides them by 5 and then by the test length in minutes. One typo costs the whole word, and the word you are still typing counts while it has no mistake yet. Raw speed counts every character left in your text, spaces included, in the same way. Accuracy counts a space as right only after a word typed exactly, and Backspace is not counted. Consistency is 100 minus how much your speed varied from second to second, in percent.

Characters splits the text into Correct, Wrong, Extra (typed past the end of a word) and Missed (letters left out when you pressed Space early). Your best is saved for the language and test length you chose, and New best appears when you beat it.

The Keyboard cell shows the average time between keys, the average time a key stays down, possible chatter, the five slowest keys and the letters you mistyped most. Gaps longer than 2 seconds are treated as pauses and left out, and a key needs at least two timed presses to count as one of the slowest.

Typing test not working?

The typing test needs no permission.

Nothing happens when I type

The box under the text stays disabled until you click Start typing test. If it says “Press Start first”, the run has not begun. Click the box if it lost focus, then keep typing.

The run ended without a result

Escape, Stop test, switching to another tab, minimizing the browser and leaving the page all end the run, and then nothing is scored or saved. Only a run that reaches the end of its time is scored.

Paste and autocorrect are blocked; predictions skew accuracy

Pasted or dropped text and autocorrect replacements are blocked, because they would type for you. A prediction you tap on a phone changes the word without adding keystrokes, so accuracy no longer reflects your typing. Turn off autocorrect and suggestions in the keyboard settings.

Every letter counts as wrong

The test compares the characters your system produces with the text. A wrong input language or keyboard layout produces other characters, so switch to the layout that matches your keyboard.

No keyboard figures

The Keyboard cell is hidden behind a note when the presses do not look like a physical keyboard, because on-screen keyboards send keydown and keyup together. It needs at least five key presses with a median hold of 10 ms or more. Speed, accuracy and consistency still work.

A key types twice or not at all

Look at Possible chatter after a run. If the same key keeps appearing, cleaning around it may help for a while, and on a laptop an external keyboard shows whether the built-in one is at fault. For a key that sends nothing, use the keyboard test to find which keys the browser never receives.

My best score disappeared

The best lives in this browser’s local storage, with one record per language and test length (for Polish, separately with and without diacritics). A private window, cleared site data or another browser starts empty. If the browser refuses to store it, bests last only for the current visit.

How we measure

The clock starts with your first letter and runs for the full 15, 30 or 60 seconds, so a pause lowers the score. Speeds are in words per minute at five characters a word, and accuracy is rounded down to a whole percent. Consistency uses your speed in each one-second slot, and key timing uses keydown and keyup timestamps, with presses of one key less than 30 ms apart counted as possible chatter. A browser cannot tell which finger you used or whether a phone keyboard changed your words.

Frequently asked questions

How is words per minute (WPM) calculated here?

Five characters count as one word, so 200 correct characters in a 60-second test make 40 WPM. The test shows two figures. Net WPM counts only the words you typed exactly right, and raw WPM counts everything left in your text, mistakes included.

What is a good typing speed in WPM?

There is no official threshold, and the test does not rank you against other typists or show an average for other people, because it collects no results from anyone. Its labels run from Warming up under 20 WPM to Very fast from 90, and they describe speed only. Language, word list and keyboard all change the number, so compare with your own best at the same test length.

Why is my speed lower here than on other typing tests?

Usually because net speed counts a word only when it is exactly right, so one typo costs the whole word. The text is random lowercase words without punctuation, and you finish each word with Space. A test that counts every typed character will show a higher number, and raw speed is the closer match to it.

Do mistakes I correct with Backspace count?

They count against accuracy but not against net speed. Accuracy is the share of correct keystrokes out of all keystrokes, so a wrong letter you fixed stays in the total, while Backspace itself is not counted. Net speed looks only at the words in the final text, so a word you corrected into the right form counts in full.

Does the typing test save my best score?

Yes, but only in this browser. The test keeps your best net speed for each language and test length and sends it nowhere. See “My best score disappeared” further down this page for when it starts empty again.

Does the typing test work on a phone?

Yes. Tap Start typing test and type on the on-screen keyboard, which usually opens by itself. Speed, accuracy and consistency work as usual, but the key timing in the Keyboard cell needs a physical keyboard, because on-screen keyboards do not report it. Turn off autocorrect and predictions for a fair result.
